As the weather warms up, our joints thaw out, and movement becomes necessary. Dancing, whether that be alone in your room or in a venue full of people, is one of the rawest forms of expression there is. Music is dance’s muse, of course, and no one knows how to inspire like a female DJ. Below are some female-fronted electronic duos to get you ready for summer.
Fcukers
Fcukers is an electronic duo led by Shanny Wise and Jackson Walker Lewis. On their newest album ‘Ö,’ their jazz sensibilities and blasé delivery slide perfectly against their bouncy, y2k revitalized garage beats. They sound almost bored of themselves, their sound pours out of them with no effort at all, and even so, every beat makes you want to move.
MGNA Crrrta
MGNA Crrrta is a force of nature, but its giddy, blingy exterior hides this fact very well. Based in New York, the duo has known each other since they were 11. This childlike, internet age energy bleeds into their new mixtape ‘Beautiful Disaster.’ Pitchfork has described their music as “brainrot,” but songs like “The American Experience” and “Gimme it all” are anything but. These girls have something to say, and they’re saying it with such ecstasy.
Bassvictim
In a similar vain, Bassvictim is a London-based duo composed of Polish-English singer-songwriter Maria Manow and American-English producer Ike Clateman. Their most recent album, ‘?,’ draws on natural and bright sounds with fuzzy, intimate lyrics layered on top. The album is dynamic and vulnerable, and is wrapped up beautifully in a way that signifies growth and finality.
