At 5:46 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) sent out a message saying all activities and session hosted will be canceled from a district-wide fiber outage. The occurrence of school activities later in the day will be considered for resumption.
Previously, at 1:31 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, The National Weather Service relayed severe tornado warnings in Southeastern Michigan until 2:15 a.m.
“I was pretty certain we wouldn’t be in any actual danger of a tornado, but the basement felt extra safe and comfortable,” freshman Kalina Brose said. “I bet it was pretty shocking to the students who prepared for the SAT.”
PSAT 10 and SAT testing was scheduled for April 15 as well and will be rescheduled, along with the late-start for freshman and seniors.
“The outage impacts all of our school’s phone systems, camera systems, building access, and fire notification, suppression, and safety systems,” Superintendent Jazz parks communicated in district email.
Furthermore, there are AAPS buildings with structural damage and with power outages. Transportation-wise, there are also Ann Arbor facilities experiencing flooding, water main breaks, gas leaks and destroyed powerlines with debris.
“AAPS is working with the City of Ann Arbor’s Emergency Operations Center, receiving updates on damage across the city that may continue to impact the safe operations of schools,” Parks wrote in her email. “As we assess damage to the schools, we will keep you informed regarding the status of our school buildings.”
