The wrestling team continues to succeed this year, their next match is this Thursday Jan.8 at Bedford.
Their previous match at the individual tournament hosted by Ypsilanti High School on Dec. 6, was highlighted by a standout run from sophomore Mohanad Abufarha, who secured second place in his weight class.
While the tournament emphasized individual results, wrestlers also earned points toward the team’s overall standing. Behind several strong finishes, Huron tied for 11th place out of an estimated 21 competing schools, holding its own in a deep and competitive field.
Abufarha’s silver-medal performance continued a pattern of dominance that has defined his recent career. Head coach Daniel Crowley praised his consistency and impact on the program.
“Mohanad Abufarha is one of the most dominant wrestlers in recent Huron history, accumulating numerous podium finishes and ending his junior year as one of Huron’s two regional qualifiers,” Crowley said. “This season, Mo has placed 2nd and 3rd in Huron’s first two individual tournaments, and went 2-0 at his Senior Night last night in the Huron lower gym, pinning both of his opponents in the first period.”
In addition to Abufarha’s runner-up finish, teammates Willie Stevenson, Abdalla, and Omar each placed fifth in their respective weight classes, contributing valuable points to Huron’s team score. Their combined efforts helped the River Rats remain competitive against schools from across the region.
The tournament at Ypsilanti provided valuable early-season experience and set a positive tone moving forward. With Abufarha’s continued success and multiple top-five finishes across the lineup, Huron leaves the event with momentum and a growing sense of confidence as the season develops.
