On April 12, the Huron River Rat Jazz Band performed at a regional competition, the MSU Jazz Spectacular. The band won first place as “Outstanding Band,” and several members of the band placed as outstanding soloists. Additionally, the trombone, trumpet, rhythm, and saxophone sections all placed first.
“It was pretty fun, because we won pretty much every category, and there were some cool masterclasses,” said John McWilliams, a Huron saxophone player who placed as an outstanding soloist. “We just had to really focus on certain parts of the songs and repeat them a lot of times.”
Rudradip Ray, the band’s lead trumpet player, also placed as an outstanding soloist.
“I spent a lot of time practicing and also reached out to various teachers for guidance along the way,” Ray said, “Each one helped me look at the solo from a different angle, and that really helped me grow as a player and bring something special to the performance. It’s always a lot of fun when you’re surrounded by people who truly appreciate jazz and its unique style. From fellow students in the other programs to the knowledgeable professors and guest artists, the environment was both exciting and incredibly educational.”
If the Huron Jazz Band continues to perform well, they have the chance of advancing to the final round of competition.
“We’re definitely hopeful and keeping our fingers crossed. The band has been working really hard, and we’ll just have to wait and see,” Ray said. “I’m really grateful for the experience and for everyone who helped make it happen. It’s always inspiring to be part of a community that values jazz and pushes each other to grow.”
McWilliams shared his thoughts on the possibility.
“We do have a shot at it, but everyone really needs to lock in,” McWilliams said.
