Amy Yang, a freshman, was a runner on the Huron Women’s Cross Country team this year. Although Yang had some prior running experience, the first organized cross-country team she was on was at Clague Middle School. She feels that staying motivated during cross-country practices can be tough because they are sometimes long and rigorous.
“I think what motivates me is that at cross-country practice is that I get to train with my friends, and that makes me feel nice,” Yang said.
Yang also has to balance the frequent meets and practices with her regular schoolwork as well.
“Typically, I go to cross country first, and then when I get home I do my homework, and I try to stay organized, and I have a to do list as well,” Yang said.
Yang also shared how she liked the team building opportunities and activities that were available at Huron for the Women’s Cross Country team as well. She also tells us that the time commitment is an important necessity for being on the team.
“I think the hardest part might be the time commitment because there are a lot of meets and a lot of practice sessions and a lot of team bonding events that you should go to. I think it’s a lot of time committing, but it’s really fun,” Yang said.
Yang is also very supportive of her teammates. Her favorite part of the meets are just being there for her friends, and being an encouragment throughout the race.
“I love cheering on my teammates when they’re racing and also just celebrating right after the meet,” Yang said.“I think you should just go for it. Cross-country is a really nice sport and you should consider joining.”
