Last weekend, from May 9-10, the Huron Varsity Rowing Team had an excellent performance at the Midwest championship held at Kensington. A grand total of 59 teams from seven different states competed in a chance to qualify for Nationals.
Huron’s squad had boats in 13 preliminary races on Saturday and only two of them did not qualify for Sunday’s events. On Sunday, two performances from the River Rats were notable: the women’s V4+ placed second and the men’s Jr4 placed 4th. With this second place finish, the women rowers are headed to nationals for Memorial Day weekend, a huge accomplishment. Furthermore, the men’s boat has a chance at qualifying as well through an at-large bid.
Senior captain Jo Peters played a big role in their victory. Peters is committed to row at Wisconsin University, a Division 1 program.
“It was really good. We kind of knew going into it we would place pretty high,” Peters said.
Now the team is looking forward to May 23 -24 to try and win the highest award there is at the national level.
“We’re going to need rest and recovery from the Midwest meet and from States next week,” Peters said. “Also, we’ll continue to practice like sprints and then we’re going to make sure that we’re going to avoid the bad things we did in the past.”
