On October 29, Huron’s boys soccer team made history with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Troy Athens. This officially secured their spot in the state finals for the first time in program history. The win also energized the entire school community, as students and staff celebrated the team’s remarkable run.
This was no easy task. Troy Athens has previously won the state championship. But Huron, driven by the hopes of winning the state title, came prepared both mentally and physically. The team’s focus and determination were evident through the game, especially as they held their lead against a relentless opponent. Many players described the atmosphere as intense, but also motivating, knowing how much was on the line.
The River Rats had already shattered expectations earlier in the season when they won their first ever district championship. That momentum carried them through regionals and into the semifinals, where they continued to prove themselves against some of the toughest competition in the state. Each round added a new sense of confidence, and the team began to believe more strongly that a deep postseason run was possible.
“I feel great, it’s an incredible accomplishment,” senior Noah Zahuranec said. “It’s nice that we’re into the finals.”
For many players, the semifinal victory represented years of hard work and teamwork. It also highlighted how much their chemistry and trust had grown throughout the season.
“It felt great to win because I knew we were gonna be in the championship,” senior Thomas Ewy said. “We were pretty confident in the game because we’d already beaten them. We also watched a lot of films to study their strategies, so we knew exactly what we had to do.”
The head coach and parents alike also emphasized how much the team’s chemistry has contributed to its success this season. Many players have grown up playing together, and that chemistry has strengthened their communication and trust on the field.
The victory marks a defining moment for Huron soccer.
With the state finals soon, the team now has a chance to end their extraordinary season with the ultimate prize: a state championship. Regardless of the outcome, Huron’s boys soccer team has already made a huge mark on the program’s history and inspired the next generation of players.
