Jisoo is an artist who rose to fame in the K-pop girl group BLACKPINK. Her unique vocals in BLACKPINK’s songs added a spark to the group’s albums. In March of 2023, she debuted her first solo single, ME, which became the best-selling album by a female soloist in South Korea. After almost two years lying in wait, Jisoo came back with a fiery new EP, “AMORTAGE”.
“AMORTAGE” was released on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2025, and the day fits with the concept of her new album perfectly;. it captures the different moments of love in a relationship. The album name combines the French word, amour, meaning love, and the word montage, meaning the process of editing or piecing together a film. With these two words combined, her album pieces together and explores all stages of love, from the heart-racing beginnings of it to the acceptance of letting it go.
The album opens with “earthquake”, an upbeat and catchy song about the excitement of a new relationship, but also the uncertainty of it. Jisoo sings, “My heart races faster, my whole body is trembling,” comparing the feelings of a new relationship with an earthquake, as it rocks her world. Her music video begins with her receiving a text from her significant other. At first, she smiles, but as the lights flicker, something feels off. Her phone is quickly confiscated by a man in black, an agent from the Department of Heart Security, before she’s suddenly whisked away to an interrogation.
It symbolizes her doubt about her real feelings for this mysterious significant other. After a puzzling question, she races from the interrogation room in a sleek black car, showing how she gains confidence and mows down any doubt in her way that shows up as big blocky letters, bold and loud on the screen, “CAN YOU TRUST HIM?” Her confidence in her new relationship transitions seamlessly into the rest of her album.
“Your Love”, the second track, starts with a soft beat and transitions into a dreamy sound. Jisoo sings about how their love feels to her, “Your love feels like the rain, feels like a song I used to know,” conveys how Jisoo thinks of their love, as a familiar warm thing, and celebrates the small things in life. Just as Jisoo is at her high, it dips into the subdued beginning of “TEARS”.
Jisoo starts “TEARS” by singing about missing someone, but the song soon turns into an anthem for leaving a broken heart in the past as Jisoo sings, “Today are my last tears, this one’s on me.” She closes out the song with a peaceful goodbye, the background displaying a happier tune as she sings, “Now I say goodbye to the love story we made. And now I say goodbye to the kisses we shared. Feels like I’m tearing apart, but it’s goodbye for real. Cheers.”
Jisoo wraps up her journey with love in “Hugs and Kisses”, an energetic song about breaking free from the chains of an old love. In her verse “Holding me down, telling me I should be grateful, shameful”, she finally breaks free from the love that’s restricting her and says she won’t put up with it anymore.
All in all, Jisoo beautifully captured the arc of emotions in love, with upbeat and dreamy songs on this album. This album is perfect to listen to when you’re in the mood for something vibrant and exciting. Her album is available on Apple Music and Spotify.
