The Huron River Rats and the Pioneer Pioneers fought a hard battle in Riverbank Stadium on Tuesday evening. Both teams had many good chances throughout the game, but there were overall no goals scored.
Huron had a dangerous free kick in the first half taken by Esteban Mercado. It was about 25 yards out from the goal and was in the left center of the field. Mercado crossed the ball into the box but the River Rats were unable to put the ball in the net.
Pioneer had a huge chance late in the first half. The Pioneer striker got past the Huron back line and had an open shot. The shot was saved by Huron goalkeeper Matthew Pletcher to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Huron had another big chance later on in the game when Huron striker Gabe Priestley was given a through ball with a one on one versus the goalkeeper. The Pioneer goalkeeper made an incredible save to keep the game level at zero apiece.
The game was then stopped due to lightning in the second half, with about thirty minutes to go. The refs, trainers, and coaches all deemed that the storm would not stop anytime soon and decided it was in the best interest of everyone to cancel the rest of the game. The game was called and counted as a 0-0 tie in this highly anticipated rivalry.
