The First Win: A Player’s Perspective

Aaron Garrett, Staff Writer

From the very first day of practice, leading up to our first game, I felt like a winner. That first Friday hit sooner than expected, and once the lights turned on and we ran out of our locker room, I went into my zone. Then, as a team, we pulled off what couldn’t be accomplished in the past five years. We won.

The best moment for me was seeing the game clock hit double zeros. The whole team went nuts and it felt so good to know that our losing streak had just been broken. To me it felt like a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders.

Being a senior has its own responsibilities on and off the field. So the other seniors and I had to set the tone during practice and on game day. It felt so good seeing that our hard work paid off. The feeling of being doubted and expected to fail is one of the worst feelings ever. Until you prove those people wrong. Getting the win was more than just the end of a losing streak. It was the beginning of a statement which is that we have been on the bottom for too long. It’s our time to reach the top and we are definitely on our way.

The varsity football team runs to the sideline as the game ends to meet the crowd of cheering fans. Huron beat Ecorse 63 to 14 in their first win in five years.

The way we played felt so elite. While I was taking a defensive break on the sidelines, I watched our offense play like never before. The student section screamed as receivers juked out there defenders and ran wide open as the QB threw long bombs down the field. Every time we scored the whole stadium went nuts, and on defense, it was the same way. Being on the field hearing people yelling the number 31 and hearing my parents cheering me on felt great because not only was the whole school there to celebrate the win with me, but my family, the people I care about the most, were there too.
