Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what hobbies/sports you do.

A: I am a junior. I’m 16 and I am relatively new to Ann Arbor. My parents. Well, my dad and my stepmom moved here a couple years ago and went to college at UVM. And so I’ve been with them. I’m really into theater, and I’ve done a couple of musicals and a couple of plays. I also am a huge reader. So I’m kind of a nerd, I guess people would say, but yeah, that’s pretty much it.

Q: How would you describe your transition from your last high school to this high school?

A: Pretty messy. During my tenth grade it was kind of a mess. I went to a public school for the first semester. Then the second semester I was homeschooled and went to a co-op once a week. It was all very messy trying to get into the school because we didn’t have all my transcripts and all the information that we needed. Especially since I was moving houses from my mom’s house to my dad’s house. So it was messy, but it was definitely worth it and I was ready to get in school. Just basically out of fear of getting behind. I like school, but I’m not like all over it. Really, I was just hoping I didn’t get too far behind.

Q: What class is the most interesting so far and why?

A: Normally I would pick a history class, because I find history fascinating. As long as you have a good teacher, I feel like that’s really important, but I’m taking economics this year instead of a history class. I would probably say either that or my English class. I take contemporary world literature. And we’re going through poems right now. I can’t write poems, but I really love to read them and just look into the meanings behind them.

Q: What are 3 words to describe your first week at Huron high school and why?

A: The first one word would be scary. I feel like it’s always a little nerve wracking starting at a new school, especially when you don’t know anybody. It’s also exciting. You don’t know who you’re gonna meet and there’s always so much possibility behind it. I don’t know many people in classes and I’m just learning new things. Then I guess my first week, I’m going to be very honest, overwhelming. Huron is a lot bigger than a lot of the schools that I’ve gone to in the past and 5000 students is a lot. So the first week I was very much just trying to get used to and adapt to how big the school was.

Q: How has this high school surprised you so far? Were there any skills you had to learn to get work done or fit school into your schedule?

A: I think the biggest thing that surprised me was the amount of focus on education and colleges. Just the amount of opportunities here, because that’s not something I’ve experienced in the past. There’s just a lot of importance on your education and things like that, and I think the biggest skill I’ve had to learn is probably social skills. I’m not a very good socializer or very good at making friends. So I definitely feel like learning how to just go up and say hi to people and not let myself stop me from making friends.

Q: How do you want to remember your high school experience when you’re older? What are you doing now or how do you plan to make that happen?

A: I don’t want to regret not doing things out of fear of something happening. I’m not really worried about this. I guess I just want to live in the moment and try not to be stressed about it. But I also understand that it’s high school so it’s really stressful. (I want to) I don’t know look back on it fondly. I know a lot of people look back on their high school experience and they just would not go back for anything in the world. They would never go back and I’m not saying I would want to go back but just to be at peace with it and think yeah, that was a time in my life. I enjoyed it.
