Ginny and Georgia Season 2: Brilliantly Funny and Dramatic

Ashley Kim, Staff Writer

Television’s most dramatic and comedic mother-daughter duo is back! On Jan. 5, 2023, Season 2 of the Netflix series Ginny and Georgia was released. As an avid fan of the show, I was very excited about this news, along with thousands of other Ginny and Georgia fans around the world, and I was not disappointed.

Ginny and Georgia is a comedy-drama television show, created by Sarah Lampert. The show follows Ginny, played by Antonia Gentry, and her mom Georgia, played by Brianne Howey. Georgia was a teen mom, who now has 2 kids, and is kind of an unconventional mother. She had a troubled and traumatic past, struggling with abuse and difficult decisions all her life, which has shaped her and her family’s future. Ginny is a teenage girl, who struggles with racism, school, family, her mental health, and her social life. Throughout the show, you see Ginny and Georgia navigate their way through their new town, Wellsbury.

In the majority of shows I’ve watched, I have felt as though season 2 was worse than season 1. The plot is drawn out, it becomes repetitive, and the show runners run out of ideas. However, season 2 of Ginny and Georgia was different.

The second season of Ginny and Georgia was better than the first. It kept the same overall vibe and theme as the first season, while still deepening and expanding on the original plot. It dove deeper into Ginny’s mental health and focused more on the racism she faced. It also showed more of Georgia’s past, and helped fill in some of the blanks that season 1 left. Additionally, it looked into some of the other supporting characters more, instead of just focusing on Ginny and Georgia. For example, it brought Marcus’ mental health to light, and displayed how depression can affect people.

The first season, although it did discuss some serious topics, was pretty fun and light in general. It introduced a lot of serious issues, but didn’t focus on any of them. Season 2, on the other hand, really paid attention to all of the issues that were alluded to in the first season, and became much more serious and less comedic. I, personally, really enjoyed this change. I felt like it was a good development for the show and added to the show’s entertainment and drama level.

Although a season 3 hasn’t yet been confirmed, it is expected due to the success of the first two seasons. There have still been a lot of unresolved issues, and many characters or plots that haven’t been explored. Abby, for example, has been shown to struggle with an eating disorder, and possible bulimia and body dysmorphia. However the first two seasons of this show have clearly ignored her and her struggles, to focus more on the main characters.

Ginny and Georgia is a great show, which perfectly balances the comedy and drama genres. Ginny and Georgia has a really good plot and characters, and continues to improve. I really enjoyed both seasons one and two of this show, and I hope season 3 is made.
