Disappointingly Average: Avatar 2

Grace Pang, Staff Writer

Avatar 2 was disappointingly average.

It’s not bad, but it also didn’t meet my high expectations. Since its release in December, it has reached over $2 billion worldwide in grosses, making it one of the top fourth  best-selling movies. There are even confirmed two more movies coming out in 2024 snd 2028. Yet, with all the hype and people talking about how amazing it was, I was slightly disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the visual aspects, the underwater scenes, the music, it was all stunning, but the plot and script are where it falls behind. I felt as if there were many unresolved issues that ultimately left the movie feeling incomplete. Though the plot holes could potentially be setting up the series in future movies, this movie left too many open for it to be considered enticing. Things like Kiri’s visions/seizures/connections with her mother were presented once or twice in the movie and never discussed again. The part where Neytiri doesn’t hesitate to hold a knife against Spider, where was that resolution? Was Neytiri faking her hatred toward him? Do they just accept Spider as a son now? Does Neytiri have any objections? There are just too many unanswered questions that left me feeling cheated. For a movie that is over 3 hours long, I expected more. What was with the script using so much modern slang? I can’t even count how many times the word “bro” was used by the sons. Sure, they could have gotten it from their human dad, but would it be that prominent in their vocabulary? It didn’t match what I imagined the Pandora world to be like.

All of this is not to say Avatar 2 was a terrible movie and does not deserve its current status. I can definitely see the strong aspects this movie offers. Watching the movie in 3D, I was able to immerse myself in the story. I just think that the hype surrounding the movie did not correlate with my own opinions. After all, these are just my opinions after watching the movie.

You should watch it yourself and let me know what you think.
