Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and what hobbies/sports you do.
A: Hi! My name is Anoushka, and I’m currently a sophomore at Huron High School. Some of the things I love to do are reading, singing, swimming, and listening to music. I also really enjoy going to concerts and traveling whenever I get the chance.
Q: How is this years learning different than last years?
A: This year, I’m in a lot more advanced classes than I was last year, so the coursework has definitely been more challenging. I’ve found myself spending a lot more time studying and doing homework. I’m also taking my math class at the University of Michigan, so it’s been a completely different experience compared to high school – the material is a lot more advanced, expectations are a whole lot higher, and it’s a lot more independent. The professor doesn’t guide you through things the same way high school teachers do, so it’s really on you to keep up and take responsibility for your own learning.
Q: Which classes have you found the most interesting and why?
A: One of the classes I’ve found interesting this year is AP Lang. In previous years. I didn’t feel like I was really learning much in my English classes, but this year has been different – the material is actually engaging, and I feel like I’m improving. I also work well with my classmates, which makes the class even better. Another class I’ve really enjoyed is Chemistry. We’ve done a lot of cool labs and experiments, and I like the way the class is structured – it feels like we’re being treated more like capable students, with just the right amount of guidance and freedom to figure things out ourselves.
Q: Describe something that surprised you coming back to school this year that you weren’t expecting?
A: Something that surprised me coming back to school this year is how strictly the phone rule is being enforced. Last year, most of my teachers were pretty relaxed about it, but this year, all of them are making sure phones are put away and constantly checking to enforce it.
Q: What are your thoughts about personal project? What were some challenges you have faced so far? What are you working on?
A: I think Personal Project is a really interesting concept. It has the potential to be both fun and useful in the long run, and I like that it gives us the opportunity to explore something we’re genuinely interested in. That said, I haven’t loved how the class has been structured so far. Most of our time has gone into setting up slides and planning the process, but we haven’t had any time at all to work on our actual projects. Like many others, I haven’t started mine yet, and with the deadline approaching, it’s a little frustrating how little time we have left to actually create something.
Q: If you could change one thing from your freshman self, what would it be?
A: One thing I would change about my freshman self is my sleep schedule. I used to stay up really late finishing homework, and I still do. As a result, I don’t get enough sleep during the week, and I’m usually tired throughout the day. This is something I would really like to improve this year.
