Started in October of the 2023-24 school year, Vietnamese-American sophomore at Huron Salem Dinh started a Dear Asian Youth (DAY) chapter at Huron High School. DAY a club centered around empowering Asian identities and creating change.
Dinh, who’s never started a club before, went through a tough process of starting their club at Huron with sophomores Aarna Desai, Ella Yip, and Natalie Cho.
“We had to go through a lengthy process with the actual worldwide organization,” Dinh said. “We had to be approved to be a chapter and talk to people. It was long, but I think it was worth it.”
DAY was created so that Huron students had a space to promote the Asian American experience, create a community, and unite through activism.
“I like it because it’s rewarding,” Dinh said. “I’ve always wanted to create change and being Asian is a really large part of my identity. There’s not really a club out there that talks about those experiences in an accurate way.”
With the school year continuing, the Huron club has many plans and activities for the student body. From bonding events to fundraisers, Dinh hopes for an exciting year ahead.
“Our first event is going to be this November, a Diwali fundraiser,” they said. “We might be doing a Boba fundraiser for Lunar New Year too.”
Ella Yip, social media manager, is equally as excited to coordinate activities, but the goal of the club is what’s most important to her.
“DAY was started by youth, so our way of thinking is similar,” she said. “Everyone has a connection because there isn’t a disconnect like there is with adult leaders. It’s a new experience trying to open up a space for people to explore and share what they need.”
