When Jessica Wu was 13, she couldn’t even hit the ball. But now, she plays against some of the toughest competitors in her region. Golf, famously ‘a good walk spoiled,’ went from being Wu’s greatest enemy to her favorite pastime.
“I was really, really bad,” she said. “A lot of people don’t believe golf is a hard sport, but there’s a lot of mental skill. There’s so many niches like perfecting your swing and just your overall game.”
The learning curve for Wu was difficult. Competitive dance and playing the cello, some of her best talents, were far from similar to golf.
“I wasn’t used to the level of technicality in it,” she said. “I hated golf, there were countless times where I was close to quitting. But each practice gave me more confidence.”
More than two years later, Wu plays in varsity matches every week this season, and has grown to love the sport. She loves how the Huron girls golf team provides a sense of community for her.
“I truly think we’re a collaborative team,” she said. “We all know each other so well, and every practice is so much fun. Now that I’m a better player than before, golf has become a huge part of my life. I don’t plan on quitting anytime soon.”
