Why Donda Trumps Certified Lover Boy
December 24, 2022
The feeling that I felt listening to Kanye’s “Donda” for the very first time remains unmatched. With the raw emotion and amazing features, he put on the album, it remains his best album since “The Life Of Pablo” in 2016. Given that it got released past its original release date, in 2021, Drake’s album was released less than a week later. Naturally, the world got to debating which one was the better album. However, there is no question that “Donda” is better than “Certified Lover Boy” on every single level.
The debate was not without substance, though, given that both artists are extremely influential in this generation and the last. CLB sold 744 million copies, and Donda sold 357 million. However, album sales do not equate to the quality of one’s album or overall music. The difference in numbers could’ve been in protest, due to Kanye’s album arriving later than fans expected. Kanye simply put more genuine emotion in his album than Drake. The first track of the album features the heartbeat of his late mother, Donda West. This alone was enough to grab the listener’s attention. Given that Kanye has a more diverse discography, it is clear that “Donda” is more diverse than surface-level CLB.
It can be debated that CLB has had more of an effect on pop culture, but that doesn’t erase that Donda is the better album. CLB featured collaborators such as Yebba, Lil Baby, Lil Durk, and Ty Dolla $ign. Donda featured artists such as Andre 3000, The Weeknd, Jay-Z, Lil Baby, Syleena Johnson, and Kid Cudi. Just by listing some of the features on each album, you can easily identify the more rounded and diverse tracklist. CLB features lots of artists that are alike. However, Donda features artists that make different kinds of music.
The next time you listen to Certified Lover Boy again, consider listening to Donda instead. It will become obvious to you who has the better album, and why.
