Sophomore Saturday: Nick Yiu
March 20, 2021
Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: “My name is Nick Yiu and I’m a sophomore at Huron. I am on the varsity soccer team and play violin in the Huron symphony orchestra. I enjoy playing FIFA and hanging out with family and friends.”
Q: What is your favorite class and why?
A: “My favorite class is orchestra because it’s an enjoyable and relaxing class. We spend a lot of time collaborating and making music with each other which is a very unique opportunity in distance learning. The orchestra community is a very tight-knit group that has allowed me to make many friends in addition to many memorable experiences through events outside of school such as orchestra camp.”
Q: What hobbies/sports/clubs do you do and why do you like them?
A: “I play soccer for Huron and Liverpool, as well. Soccer is one of my biggest passions because it helps me forget all of my problems and relieve stress the moment I step onto the field. My teammates have become very close friends for many years and it is always fun to play against teammates and other players I know from the soccer community during the high school season.”
Q: Once the pandemic ends and social distancing restrictions are removed, what’s the first thing you plan to do?
A: “The first thing I plan to do is hang out with as many of my friends in one setting as possible. I have not seen many of them for almost a year now, though we have spent many hours online playing video games together which has now become boring.”
Q: What’s an interesting/unique fact about yourself?
A: “An interesting fact about myself is that I was born in Hong Kong but am of Brazilian and Chinese heritage.”
Q: What is one lesson the past year has taught you?
A: “This past year has taught me to take care of my health and not take things for granted. Through my ACL injury and quarantine, I have realized how important my mental and physical health are, as they can influence every other aspect of my life. After not seeing my friends and family I have learned to not take the time I spend with them for granted because your time with them is never guaranteed and you never know when you will see them again.”
