Huron’s journalism program in Washington D.C.
November 27, 2019
Missing school isn’t always easy, but for the right reasons, it can be very rewarding. 11 Ann Arbor Huron high school students traveled to Washington D.C. to represent their journalism program. These students were at a variety of skill levels but they all went on this trip to learn and ultimately better their journalistic skills. They missed three days of school and were in D.C. from Nov. 20 through 24. The students had the opportunity to compete at the National Scholastic Press Association’s conference but they also visited the WMAL-FM recording studio, visited various monuments and memorials, and best of all the Huron Emery, Huron’s newspaper, placed fourth in their category on a national level. Individual students also competed in a variety of different contests including first-year photo, feature writing, photo story, and review writing. Junior Alena Halliwill received an honorable mention in the first year photographer section, senior Nikki Nevaux received an honorable mention in the portrait contest, senior Julie Heng received a superior award in the news commentary contest, junior Clara Bowman received an excellency award in the news writing contest, senior Catherine Bass received an excellency award in review writing, and senior Manit Patel received an honorable mention in the sports writing contest. The purpose of this conference is not only to highlight student journalists and their various programs, but it was also intended to teach students more about their field to better their newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, and more. One of the editors-in-chief of the Huron Emery, Julie Heng along with the staff advisor Mrs. Badalamente presented a session about the staff manual the newspaper program uses. The Huron Emery staff is continuously working to better their journalism programs. Winning so many awards for Huron as well as for Ann Arbor Public Schools is a step in the right direction and they hope to win even more awards next year! Here are a few moments from their trip.
