The JV field hockey team won their first game since 2023 with a 1-0 victory over East Grand Rapids on Friday.

“We lost our minds immediately,” JV captain Allison Worth said. “I am so proud of this team.”

Freshman Ayralee Spork scored the only goal of the game, making the team’s second goal of the season.

“I didn’t realize the ball went into the goal until everyone started screaming and chanting,” Spork said.

After the goal, left midfielder Muirenn Aherne immediately went into a cheer.

“I wanted to get the crowd up and everyone excited,” Aherne said. “We never get to be excited and be hype on the field.”

The game was originally supposed to be later in the day, but it got moved up due to a football game being held at Huron. This last-minute change made captain Aiza Ahsan initially worried, but she quickly saw how well her team was playing.

“We did a good job working together and with communication,” Ahsan said. “This team has really improved this year.”

Spork’s goal coupled with the team’s defense through the rest of the game allowed them to win the game. This being their first win in two years, the team was beyond thrilled.

Varsity player Vanshika Chavan was playing defense for JV during the game. After Spork scored the goal, she made sure to concentrate on her role.

“We had to be more focused to make sure that we didn’t get any more corners or goals from our part,” she said. “We definitely played a bit more defense heavy towards the end.”

Worth was proud to see the team’s efforts pay off.

“I was just so happy to see that we finally won,” she said. “All of this work that our new people had put in actually worked.”
