Over the last five years, I’ve been lucky enough to see Mitski live twice–once at the Pitchfork festival in Chicago, and once at the Fillmore in Detroit. Mitski is a true performer; her stage presence and choreography are almost as gut-wrenching as her music itself. She turns into the physical embodiment of everything she sings about–love, loss, pain, and healing–and makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room, even in a jam-packed venue. On September 8th, her concert film Mitski: The Land was announced.
The movie was filmed over the course of three performances at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre during her seventh album’s tour, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. The album is built on the idea of love and all its forms and contradictions.
Mitski reimagines the world of her discography in this tour to fit the artist she is today. Through her 2024 tour, she’s used a seven-piece acoustic band to weave the sound of desolate Americana through each song. As well as this, her stage design (by Andi Watson) is specifically utilized to create this world. It allows her to poignantly evoke feelings of both isolation and deep human connection through beautiful visual elements.
The film will be in theaters on October 22nd for a limited time. While no official song list has been released, the trailer features the songs “Thursday Girl,” “My Love Mine All Mine,” and “Washing Machine Heart,” setting the tone for the film as a whole. You can buy tickets for Mitski: The Land on the film’s website.
