On Tuesday, Sept. 9 from 6 to 8:45 p.m., Huron High School hosted its annual Capsule Night for parents to immerse themselves in their child’s secondary school environment. The event involves convening in the Meyers Auditorium for presentations on the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Huron, introduction to the Huron Administration and preface to student life.
“Year to year it’s different,” Huron English teacher Letitiia Simmons said. “I think that there was a lot of positive energy in the building last night and we were pretty excited to brag about what we do, especially how the Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum works and a lot of parents were new to the IB curriculum.”
At 6:20 p.m., freshman, sophomore, junior and senior parents were invited to encounter the current administrative Huron team, in succession to where freshman, sophomore and new parents were encouraged to attend the opening notes on the IB program.
During her tenure at Huron, Simmons has even been sporting a tradition for every Capsule Night.
“I like to play a little game with myself to see if I can match the parent to the child,” Simmons said.
The Capsule Night was also a chance for new staff members to assimilate more into the school culture first-hand. Ninth Grade Dean Lorri English has been a recent inclusion to the Class of 2029 Office and was learning parallel to the parents.
“I really enjoyed learning about the IB program,” English said. “It was some parent’s first time and it was mine too. It was actually quite inspiring [to hear the] testimonies from students who graduated from here.”
In each of the 10 minute class blocks, the syllabus and expectations were expressed from first to eighth hour.
“It’s good for them to see where their kids are,” Simmons said. “And see that we’re taking care of them.”
