The Minecraft movie has been blowing up movie theaters with its release bringing in all ages of fans of the video game. The hype for this movie reached those who grew up playing the game when it first came out to children who are in their obsessed stage with the video game.
While as a fan myself I can say the movie was funny, visually amazing, but downright disappointing.
The Minecraft movie released on April 4, 2025, it made over $163 million in the box office on its opening weekend. The movie has been hyped up since the start as Minecraft has a very loyal fanbase. Along with the trailer being released the movie partnered with Mcdonalds to create a Minecraft themed happy meal. By doing this it only excited people more than ever and the anticipation for when the movie hit theaters was heavy. While people enjoyed the special Minecraft merch that came because of the movie, not many fans actually enjoyed the Minecraft movie.

I recently went to see the Minecraft movie in theaters one week after it dropped. I’m a long time fan as this was one of the first video games I ever played. When I first heard about this movie I was ecstatic, I have always wanted a Minecraft movie since I was young. While excited to learn about the creation of the movie, when I first saw the trailer I was more or less displeased with the plot. Even though the trailer didn’t give out the whole movie you as a watcher can already decide if it’s going to be something you like or hate.
After watching the full movie I can admit that this movie in some parts was enjoyable and did make me laugh but the multiple issues throughout the movie made its ranking sink to me.
The first issue you encounter with the movie is it’s boring and forgettable plot. It’s truly nothing new with the misbehaving and weird younger sibling and the protective parent type older sibling dynamic. Along with that we have the irresponsible adult that gives them bad advice and another adult who really doesn’t get any screen time at all! All the characters are forgettable and have no true thing that makes them stand apart from each other besides their age.
Another issue I had with this movie was their creation of items that never even existed in Minecraft, for example one of the main characters creates a tater tot launcher. Perhaps I’m just a purist but I thought that this idea didn’t really make any sense as there are weapons in the game you use to defend yourself like a sword.

It’s not just me who has these opinions though, more Minecraft fans are calling this movie a royal flop! Fans on social media apps like Tiktok, Instagram, and Twitter have given their opinion on what they think about the movie, only a few had good things to say about it. A main issue amongst everyone is that the plot of the movie moves so fast and makes no sense after a while. While understandable that they have to save the world of Minecraft there is a point where everything the characters do just feel useless. It’s like you never get to watch the struggles of the characters and how they overcome it because they are already moving on to the next thing.
For wanting a Minecraft movie to happen for years, I sadly am not happy with what we were given. I wish the movie went more into the actual gameplay of Minecraft and what the characters would be challenged with just like any normal player. Even though I was not impressed by this movie it does not mean I will stop loving Minecraft. I will say if you are a fan of Minecraft and worry about not seeing the movie, you aren’t missing much.
