Q: Tell me a little about yourself and things you do in and out of school?
A: Hi I’m Iris Gong, I’m involved in the BioGIDAS and HOSA clubs here and I also play for varsity lacrosse. Outside of Huron, I like to volunteer with my Chinese School and cultural advocacy group. I often explore new music, book, and movie genres during my free time.
Q: Out of all your clubs, extracurriculars, and sports, which one is your favorite and why?
A: My favorite has to be HOSA since I joined as a freshman who was pretty adamant about taking the medical route, and while my career interests have changed since then, the friendships and bonds I’ve created through HOSA have stayed consistent for much longer.
Q: What is your favorite Huron event? (Multi Culti, Pep Rally, Homecoming, etc)
A: I love watching the Multi Culti performances every year (I always go twice- once during the parent night performance and the other during school)! It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about different cultures I may not be as familiar with, and the performances are all super entertaining every year.
Q: Where is your favorite spot at Huron and what do you like about it?
A: Definitely not a popular choice but the lunch line. Aside from it being among the only places at Huron where I’m actively looking forward to something, I’ve also spent time in this line with many different people and conversations throughout high school, to the point where its consistency has become somewhat nostalgic.
Q: What is your favorite high school memory?
A: Freshman year HOSA states, since the regulations were less strict so we obviously had more fun by bending some curfew and rooming rules.
Q: Who is one of your favorite teachers and why?
A: I like teachers who teach their students about more than just what’s in their academic curriculum, and Mrs. Horwitz is one of them. She’s given us multiple pieces of life advice through her hilarious (and often crazy) anecdotes while encouraging us to become better writers. I also appreciate how she bonds with her students through discussing cinematic masterpieces.
Q: Which of the classes that you’ve taken is your favorite and why?
A: I like how my Health Science Clinicals class gives us an opportunity to study anatomy and physiology in-depth for an extended period of time first semester and then apply our medical knowledge to unique clinicals experiences where we get to shadow healthcare professionals.
Q: What are you thinking of doing after high school?
A: That’s a good question- one I should probably take a good minute to ponder before choosing my Michigan classes next year.
Q: What is something you’d redo throughout your high school experience if you could start over?
A: I’d spend my high school years as if school, colleges, and jobs didn’t exist… as in thinking about what I’d be doing if I weren’t a student. I definitely would’ve invested more time into those things. Other than that I have no regrets.
Q: What piece of advice would you give to the underclassmen?
A: Don’t waste time trying to impress people. Instead, focus on forming close connections that are meaningful and will matter a few years from now or even more. That’s a skill that’ll be more important than any academic information you’ll learn here.
Q: What is a hot take of yours?
A: A hot dog is a sandwich you eat in a different orientation since subs that aren’t cut through all the way counter the “two pieces of bread” argument against hot dogs as sandwiches. It’s just that we have developed a schema for what sandwiches appear to be and I think there’d be a lot less disagreements if people were more open-minded in general.
Q: What will you miss most about high school?
A: I think I’m gonna miss the simplicity of it all. Like, how small the stakes are compared to what they’ll look like after graduation. I’m a little uncertain about my future but I’ll have to confront it head-on eventually and I think I’m ready to do that.
