Q: Tell me a little about yourself and the things you do in and out of school?
A: “My name’s Anna Stenger, I’m co-president of the Greenhouse club [at Huron]. Not the club that sells stuff, the plant one. Outside of school, I mostly do a lot of stuff with Scouts. I recently became an Eagle Scout.”
Q: Out of all your clubs, extracurriculars, and sports, which one is your favorite and why?
A: “Scouts, because it’s where I’ve made a ton of friends. Not people my age, I get to be friends with12-year-olds, so I get to feel like a kid and joke around a lot, and camping is a great experience for bonding.”
Q: What is your favorite Huron event? (Multi Culti, Pep Rally, Homecoming, etc)
A: “Probably Multi Culti, because it’s really cool to see what all the students are doing. I get to see what my peers have been working on in their spare time and I’m kinda like ‘wow’. It’s cool to see.”
Q: Where is your favorite spot at Huron and what do you like about it?
A: “My favorite spot in Huron is easily the greenhouse because not many people know it, it’s kinda like hidden, and not everyone has seen it. The glass dome and the light coming through, and there’s a hydroponic growing station so you can hear the water trickling. It’s really bright and you can smell the plants and dirt, and it’s really refreshing and inspiring. Definitely my favorite place in the school.”
Q: What is your favorite high school memory?
A: My ESS class with Miss Sturt. There were some really fun people in that class. One day, we were trying to find an area of trees to study biodiversity, and I paired up with Lamar [Ashford], and we just wandered around the entire forest, and we explored the stream.
Q: Who is one of your favorite teachers and why?
A: “Mr Erikson. He created this environment in the classroom where kids actually wanted to participate, which is kind of rare. He always made people feel like they were making a good contribution to the discussion with whatever they were thinking about. He would genuinely think that everybody’s contribution was interesting. He knows a lot and is very good at creating a space where people excel because they want to impress him.”
Q: Which of the classes that you’ve taken is your favorite and why?
A: “Huron’s yoga class with Mrs. Smiguel. It was great, we got to do like stretching and meditation, and we got to take our shoes off. That was such a fun class.”
Q: What are you thinking of doing after high school?
A: “I want to study nursing, and then eventually become a psychiatric nurse practitioner, because I’ve had a lot of exposure to the medical and mental health field. I feel like it would be a really good fit for me as a person with my skills, and [be] something I enjoy.”
Q: What is something you’d redo throughout your high school experience if you could start over?
A: “I would probably try to get to know my classmates a little better during freshman and sophomore year, because they’re people [who’ve] stayed with me throughout all four years, but at this point, it’s weird to talk to them, so I kinda wish that I had done that.
Q: What piece of advice would you give to the underclassmen?
A: “I would say that they should see their classes as an opportunity instead of a chore. Because Ann Arbor has a really good education system and all the teachers at Huron are good and they actually care about the students. So don’t put your teachers down, don’t be rude to them because they’re just trying to help you. Doing the best you can is going to make you feel fulfilled.”
Q: What will you miss most about high school?
A: “Not having too many responsibilities. I like how I spend my time is completely up to me. If I wanted to spend all my time studying, I could. If I wanted to spend all my time with my friends, I could. Even though there’s stuff that has an impact on my future, I don’t have to worry about supporting myself.”
