I had first heard about Regina Song through social media. There, I came upon one of Song’s most viral and popular songs: “cutest pair.” Upon hearing the opening intro of “I know I pop into your head sometimes…” I was immediately transported to a dreamy beginning of a schoolyard romance. Digging deeper through Song’s works, I was hooked.
Debuting recently in 2021, Song is a 20 year old Singaporean singer-songwriter, with over 140,000 Spotify streams and a growing fervent and young fan base from all over the world. Song’s music consists of a mixture of pop and indie, with songs like “heartache frenzy” and “high school boy.” Following the viral hit of “the cutest pair,” from the album “fangirl”, a heartfelt confession about long-term crushes, and meant-to-bes, Song has been making waves on multiple platforms such as Spotify and TikTok.
Most recently, Song released “fairy.” a successor to “the cutest pair.” Released on Feb. 28, “fairy”, as Song describes, was written in a period of her life with mixed emotions from the thrill of her success with “the cutest pair,” to the pain of experiencing her real life heart break, ultimately sending a coming-of-age message to her fans.
Starting out relatively fast with a catchy tempo, “fairy” slowly connects with “the cutest pair” through a similar tune, melody, and lyrics, giving listeners a sense of melancholy and a hint of nostalgia. Compared to “cutest pair,” “fairy” has more anguish and stronger emotions that are mixed into the lyrics and beat of the song.
Dreamy and whimsical with the slight touch of reality, Song’s songs feel like they are straight out of a daydreaming session. The same applies to “fairy,” but with the unpredictable twist following the “storyline” of “cutest pair”, just like experienced in real life. Personally, this is my favorite part of Song’s music— the relatability. Whether it is giddy emotions that are the highest of highs, or the not-so-happy moments when you realize today just isn’t your day. The ups and downs of teenage years are delicately crafted through Song’s lyrics and tunes, from the confusion to the excitement, to the tinge of angst that comes with the delightfulness of teenage romance.
In just three years of debuting, Song has built herself a platform, established a strong fanbase, as well as had success in recent concerts and tours. With the continuation of her talent and ability, Song is bound for the road of success within the music industry. You can listen to Regina Song on Spotify or Apple Music.
