This past Wednesday, students of the Chinese language classes gathered to celebrate the special holiday, Chinese New Year. This took shape as a hotpot feast where each student brought in various ingredients to cook and eat.
Hotpot is a beloved tradition in China. During special occasions, hot-pot is the go to meal for family get-togethers. It involves boiling a variety of different foods – meats, vegetables, tofu, noodles, fish balls, mushrooms, etc. – in a simmering pot of various spices.
As much as this event was for fun, it was also a way for students to experience the rich culture of China. Students shared their thoughts about the event.
In previous years, the students had gone to restaurants to try out Chinese cuisines. However, this year, Chinese teacher Ms. Wu wanted to give her students a different experience.
“I wanted this to be hands-on,” Ms. Wu said. “Celebrating Chinese New Year is more than singing a song and learning from a textbook, we wanted to really taste Chinese New Year.”
With their tummies filled by the delicious food, students exclaimed their excitement towards doing this again next year.
