The Super Bowl is the event many Americans await for, but this year is different from others. Instead of looking forward to it, many people are actually not excited about this matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. The reasoning for this is that these two teams are very unlikeable. On one side, the Chiefs have made 4 of the last 5 Super Bowls (excluding this year) and won it 3 out of those 4 times. Many people find it frustrating when a team has a lot of success, similarly to what happened with the New England Patriots in the Tom Brady era. Additionally, many NFL supporters believe that the Chiefs have been helped by the referees all throughout the season. On the other hand, the Philadelphia Eagles also have their reasons for being disliked. The main reason being their fans. Eagles fans are known for being arrogant and disrespectful, therefore other fanbases see them as unclassy. This hatred for these two teams has led to many watchers thinking it will be a boring Super Bowl, but I believe we will have a very intense matchup to watch.
Firstly, both teams are filled up with stars. On the Chiefs side there is Patrick Mahomes II, who has been the face of the NFL for a couple of years now, Travis Kelce, Xavier Worthy, Chris Jones, and many others. These players will step up in big games like these and make big plays, which they have done in past Super Bowls. Although this experience from the Chiefs will definitely create problems for the Eagles, the Eagles have players of their own who can respond to these threats. Some of these Eagles stars are Saquon Barkley, who is having a historic season, Jalen Hurts, AJ Brown, a great offensive line to protect Jalen Hurts, and a strong defense. All this talent on the field will create great matchups all around, especially for both offenses where either team could cause problems to the defenses. This might lead to a high scoring game, which we have seen a lot this season for both teams.
Next, previous games in the season have shown that these two teams can create a good, competitive matchup. The Kansas City Chiefs have had a lot of very close games all throughout the season. Out of their 19 games played so far, 11 have been one possession games. This truly demonstrates that the Chiefs will put up a fight until the very end of the game. This also means that they can compete with any team and that almost any team can compete with them. Some argue that all these close matchups are not good for the chiefs, but they have had to play good teams all season. In the regular season, 10 of their 17 matchups consisted of an opposing team that won more than half of their games. The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t had as many intense matchups as the Chiefs, but they have put up a lot of points. They scored the 7th most points in the regular season and average the most points per game in the postseason. The fact that one team can have a competitive matchup with any team in the NFL and the other can score a lot of points could make the Super Bowl a high scoring, competitive game.
Lastly, these two teams are led by great head coaches; Andy Reid for the Chiefs and Nick Sirianni for the Eagles. These great leaders will also have a great battle. Their teams depend on them a lot and they might be the difference maker in the Super Bowl. This is also not the first time the coaches reach the Super Bowl. They both have coached in at least one Super Bowl and therefore have experience.
