Huron’s Humanities class, accompanied by Bel Canto and Acapella choirs, made their way to Detroit churches Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. There, Bel Canto and A Cappella choir sang a variety of repertoire, and students explored the Detroit area and experienced historical architectural styles and acoustics.
“Humanities went primarily to explore some of the architectural structure of the churches and to hear sort of what the acoustics would’ve been like for sacred song in that time period,” senior Maya Martinson said, a part of Huron’s Humanities class, “We also went for art, of course, having fun pointing out the styles of columns, windows, etc in each church.”
Humanities students were able to witness real-life examples of what was learnt in class.
“For me, personally, I just had a lot of fun going around and seeing some actual examples of what we were learning in class,” Martinson said. “We do a lot of hands-on visitation in Humanities, trying to apply what we see on screen to modern-day examples, so I found this a fun trip to go on just to see how far I’ve come since the beginning of the year.”
For Bel Canto and Acapella choir students, the acoustics of the historical churches provided an opportunity for unique acoustics, as well as a chance to bond as a community.
“Some of my favorite parts of the trip was seeing all of the architecture in both of the churches, and performing in those acoustics,” freshman Anoushka Prasanna said. “I learnt more about acoustics in churches, and traveling in a group made us all closer as a community.
