Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and things you do in and out of school.
A: Hi my name is Deborah Song, I’m also familiar with friends calling me Debbie or Debs. I’m a freshman and I participate on the Girl’s cross-country team and am looking forward to joining the Huron Crew team next season.
Q: Out of all your extracurriculars, clubs, and sports, which one is your favorite and why?
A: This is really hard but if I had to pick I would choose Marching band and Mock Trial. I picked marching band because through rigorous marching practices, I was able to make new friends as well as getting closer to old friends! Additionally, I picked Mock Trial because I have a ton of buddies in that class who I always look forward to seeing, and I also genuinely enjoy working on the cases and building my character.
Q: How are you liking your first year at Huron?
A: During the first few weeks of school, I absolutely dreaded Huron. My schedule was constantly changing, my band was switched, I had an extra class and my math, Spanish, and History teachers changed. I also hated being separated from my middle school lunch group, but now that I’ve settled into the rigorous schedule and built new bonds, it’s become more bearable!
Q: What is your favorite class so far and why?
A: I don’t think past me would ever agree with me but as of now my favorite class is Math. In my math class, I have really silly friends who never fail to make me laugh everyday. Also, the teacher, Ms. Williams is really chill, she makes learning math much easier.
Q: Who is one of your favorite teachers and why?
A: Mr. Crowley is one of my favorite teachers because I can tell he genuinely cares about his students, on top of that he is a very productive teacher.
Q: What is a class you want to take in the future and why?
A: I’m really excited to take driver’s ed and start driving! I can take it soon in April during the school year, but I’m going to wait till summer so I can do it with my friend who’s a few months younger than me.
Q: What is something you weren’t expecting about high school?
A: I was pleasantly shocked at how normal it was to have friends in different grades. As a middle schooler the kids in different grades would not want to do anything to do with each other. I was also surprised at how boring Hoco was. As a middle schooler I always looked forward to going, but after going this year, I don’t think I’ll go again, I definitely think it was a new experience!
Q: What advice would you give about the first weeks of high school to incoming 8th graders?
A: A piece of advice I would give about the first weeks of high school is, don’t be afraid to talk to your counselors. At the beginning of the school year I had a class I really didn’t like so I talked with my counselor to switch it to a class I was passionate about. They’re incredibly kind and are there to help and support you so don’t be afraid to ask them anything.
Q: What is an interesting fact or hidden talent about yourself?
A: I’m really good at Super Smash Bros. I’ve gone to tournaments held by AADL and was the only kid that won against adults, earning several gift cards for myself!
Q: What is a hot take of yours?
A: I think duck meat is the best meat. Absolutely delicious!
