As the Huron men’s soccer season start approached in August, the boys were excited to compete with the other schools during the season. Since Huron has a large number of players, the head coach Luis Gomez, put together four teams the could bring out the talent of everyone.
These teams included the freshmen team, which contained the incoming 8th graders transitioning to 9th grade; The Junior Varsity (JV White) team, which held the sophomores and some of the outstanding freshmen; The Junior Varsity (JV Green) team, with juniors and outstanding sophomores along with freshmen; And the Varsity team which held the seniors and a couple of students from the three teams.
On the third of September during the season, the JV White team had a home game against Lincoln high school. Fortunately for them, it was a victory for them with a score of 11-0. The player and their head coach Suzannie Dickie were all very happy because it was their first win of the season. During that game, their Coach used a 4-4-2 formation, which meant they had four defenders, for midfielders, and two forwards/strikers.
Their head coach continuously encouraged them to forget about the past games played and focus on the future. She hoped for them to aim at pressuring the other opponents during the game as that’s one of the best methods to create opportunities for scoring goals. She also reminded them that outcomes don’t matter as long as they play better than they did the game before.
On the other hand, the team captain sophomore Alexander Loomis prepared the players through informing them to have enough rest the night before the games, persuading them to hydrate as much as possible, and asking them to eat nutritious food to gain energy for their bodies.
“Honestly, we had fun and played super well against Lincoln,” Loomis said.
The excitement they had towards that game encouraged them to have a positive mindset onwards after and continue to win. Some of the players who scored during that game are:
- Freshman Liam Hyde with 3 goals.
- Freshman Duncan Carpenter with 1 goal.
- Freshman Chance Poole with 1 goal
- Sophomore Hua Hu with 1 goal
- Sophomore Lleyton Christensen with 1 goal
- Sophomore Edison McGovern with 2 goals
- Sophomore Lochlan Manthey with 1 goal
- Sophomore Daniel Yiga with 1 goal.
Ten goals in one game is a difficult task for any team to complete. The Lincoln game was a moment of excitement for not only those who scored in the game, but the entire team.
