Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and things you do in and out of school.
A: I’m Katherine, a freshman at Huron this year. I enjoy reading books, playing the Viola, spending time with family and friends, playing tennis, and going on walks with my absolutely adorable dog, Astro.
Q: Out of all your extracurriculars, clubs, and sports, which one is your favorite and why?
A: My favorite extracurricular has to be playing the Viola. Music has been a part of me for just over half my life, and I actually started off with the Violin. I later switched to the Viola because I loved the warm, deep, and rich tone it could produce – it reminded me of melted chocolate. Ever since then, I’ve loved where music has brought me: ranging from different concert halls and places, to of course, the orchestra room at Huron, where I’ve met so many incredible people and truly love the close-knit community.
Q: How are you liking your first year at Huron?
A: For the most part, I’m liking it! It’s definitely quite a shift from middle school in terms of workload and things to do, but I’ve grown to seriously love the people, the classes, and all the different activities I can get involved in.
Q: What is your favorite class so far and why?
A: My favorite class so far has to be Orchestra. There’s nothing quite like being able to end the school day by being able to play music surrounded by wonderful people, and I overall just really love the environment, the teachers Mr. Krohn and Mr. Smith, the music we create, and of course the sense of camaraderie and community that is ever-present; everything about it is just truly special.
Q: Who is one of your favorite teachers and why?
A: This is a pretty difficult question, but I have to go with Ms. Jones. She is not only truly an amazing teacher, but also a mentor. She does an incredible job at teaching and simplifying complex events in history and relating it to big overarching themes and ideas for us to understand, and is extremely helpful whenever we have any questions. She’s probably one of the nicest, sweetest, and most caring teachers I’ve ever had. She also bakes really good cookies.
Q: What is a class you want to take in the future and why?
A: A class I would like to take in the future is probably AP Chemistry, because I’d like to learn more about the topics we’ve covered in regular Chemistry more in depth, and I also really want to try the labs.
Q: What is something you weren’t expecting about high school?
A: Something I wasn’t expecting about high school was how flexible everything really is. There’s something for everyone, and you can choose from many different clubs, music, sports, and art programs. The variety of classes is also amazing; if you want to challenge yourself, you can easily do so with advanced courses, and there are so many electives to choose from that could match your interests. I’m really liking this aspect of high school, because you aren’t as limited as you were in middle school.
Q: What advice would you give about the first weeks of high school to incoming 8th graders?
A: My advice to rising freshmen would be to put yourself out there more. Definitely talk to more people and try to make new friends in each of your classes, because having a solid social circle to always connect with throughout the day is so comforting and makes high school a lot more fun. Also, sign up for that club, and don’t be afraid to take that one hard class. You’ll pull through, I promise 🙂
Q: What is an interesting fact or hidden talent about yourself?
A: I like photography and taking pictures.
Q: What is a hot take of yours?
A: Pineapple on pizza honestly isn’t that bad. But this doesn’t mean I order pineapple on pizza.
